Nerfs were a non-sentient species herded and harvested on Alderaan. The Lanmaw family was a family of nerf herders. In this profession, they made frequent trips to Aldera Palace to deliver harvested nerfs to the planet's royal family. One common use for harvested nerfs was as food, such as nerfburgers.[1]
