Moisture farming was a method of extracting water on desert planets, such as Tatooine. To harvest the water, moisture vaporators acted as pumps to bring the water from underground to the surface, where it could then be used by the planet's population. On Tatooine, the Hutt Cartel held contracts with moisture farmers, such as the Lars family, and imposed quotas on how much a farm had to extract. The water was then taken and distributed throughout the population, with most of it going to the powerful citizens of the planet.[1]
